New Sky Building (ニュースカイビル)

Japan related — 18 June 2007

There’s only one building that is going to survive the apocalypse in Tokyo :
The New Sky Building (ニュースカイビル) in Shin-Ōkubo (新大久保).

At this point I was totally and utterly trespassing but I had to get on the roof no matter what.

This battleship, which was completed in 1970, is the work of Watanabe Yōji.

Diddlefinger

Japan related — 5 June 2007

Why is Diddlefinger noteworthy ? Because most English language sites with information about Japan only feature addresses in romanji (for example “15-3 Sakuragaoka-cho, Shibuya-ku” instead of “渋谷区桜丘町15-3″) not realizing that it is virtually useless since no online maps (that I know of at least) offers romanji address search. You’re left with an address you can read but that you can’t easily locate on a map.

Romanji address search wasn’t available, until now that is, because Diddlefinger allows you to do just that: locate Japanese address written in romanji on Google maps.

Tokyo Damage Report Map

Japan related — 5 June 2007

What is this about ? Tokyo Damage Report is Steven Schultz’s website. This is how he describes it:

Japan photos and reports. Tokyo subcultures explained: fashion, fetish, punk, Engrish, visual, and so on. Plus, my tokyo tour guide!

Tokyo Damage Report is as far as it gets from your average run-of-the-mill site/blog about living in japan. It is gonzo ! Gonzo like nightly bike rides through Tokyo and visiting panty vending machines shops at 2 AM while listening to Kool Keith on headphones.

The site deals with punks show, weird art/manga characters, only-in-japan fetishes (like burusera), engrish, fucked up Tokyo architecture, a dictionary of awkward japanese and it also features a Tokyo tour guide.

This is where the map part comes in, since locating a specific address in Tokyo can be euphemistically described as “hard”, I thought it would be nice to have a map with places described the guide.
